Truth in Christianity 1 – God Exists

All my life, I have never once doubted the existence of God. I have seen my friends struggle with this topic. Before I thought that I had stronger faith but I now realize that it takes God’s grace. In this three-part article, I will examine the Truth in Christianity starting from the crust of God’s existence to the core of the Gospel. I am not an expert in anything that I am going to write about. My aim is just to show you my thinking process in the hope you will develop yours in these matters.

God has no beginning so to examine His existence I always go back to beginnings. Therefore, in this article, we shall examine the cosmos (the universe) and life. It has been proven through science that the universe had a beginning. The most widely accepted explanation in science circles is the big bang theory. When it comes to the origin of life, the most widely accepted explanation is evolution, coined by Charles Darwin.

The big bang theory

The simplest explanation is “the universe started from a very small, infinitely dense point (called a singularity), which then expanded to what we see today. The theory is supported by Einstein’s law of general relativity and the observation of galaxies moving away from one another. Don’t worry I won’t get much into these laws. The big question that remains unanswered is where the singularity came from and what caused it to expand.

It is estimated at 13.8 billion years ago, the singularity contained all of space, time, matter and energy in existence. I have watched and read a tone of explanations for this but my mind can’t simply grasp how something came from nothing. The singularity didn’t just pop into existence from nothing, this alone is enough evidence for God. But we shall examine further.

After time started in the young rapidly expanding universe, scientists have data that goes back 10-32 seconds (a very small fraction of a second after time started). Everything seems to show that the expansion was extremely finely tuned. By this, I mean that every parameter was just right to allow the formation of our universe. For example, the rate of expansion was just right, any more and stars wouldn’t have formed, any less and it would have collapsed in on itself. Probabilities have been calculated to check whether this could happen by chance. The probability for just one parameter e.g. gravity was extremely small, so much that when you factor in all the probability for all the parameters it looks like an impossibility. I consider this evidence for intelligent design from an intelligent designer.

More evidence from the cosmos

I love astronomy, from the moment I read the first book in form 1, I was hooked. From stars to nebula to blackholes I just wish there was a way I could tour the universe and see some of these things up close. Humanity has come a long way in our knowledge of the cosmos and yet we still know so little. Yet the more we study the more evidence there is of intelligence design. I recently read an article that explains similarities in the neural network in the human brain and the cosmic patterns in the galaxies. Why would there ever be a connection between two seemingly unrelated things? You can read the entire article here. This is not an isolated case, the golden spiral of our galaxy the milky-way can be observed in so many other places on earth for example in flowers.

Evolution

If you are still not convinced, let us leave the cosmos and come to the rock called earth. With an estimated age of 4.6 billion years our planet is unique unlike any other ever found, it contains life. I’m not going to address what life is, it’s just too complicated to be explained in this small article. However, let us consider its origin. There are two most common explanations creation and evolution. We will only look at evolution.

So evolution explains how life developed from a single cell organism to the complex life we see today. Like the big bang, evolution has trouble explaining where this first cell came from. There is an attempt which states that in the beginning there was a primordial soup having all the ingredients of life which then came together and formed the first cell. What are the odds of that happening? Yes, this is a very genuine question.

Proteins are the building blocks of life but we also need other things like DNA, RNA, complex sugars and more. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. For a single viable protein to form at random where you have all required amino acids the odds are 1 in 10164. Yes this is a very large number. To put to perspective, how long would it take you to guess a passcode with 4 digits? Now imagine guessing one with a thousand digits. Even if successful you only have a single protein not a working cell.

The book of life

Deoxyribonucleic acid (most commonly called DNA) is a molecule composed of two polynucleotide chains that coil around each other to form a double helix carrying genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth and reproduction of all known organisms. In short if you understand programming, DNA is the source code for everything life. It describes in detail every detail from the colour of your skin to the type of your eyes, the shape of your nose and how tall you are. So the idea that DNA exists on its own is laughable. If you see a program there must be a programmer and if you see house there must be a builder.

Conclusion

Why do we look at the same evidence and come out with different conclusions? I say it is because we look at the evidence having already decided so we make it tell what is already in our hearts. This might be what is happening in my article, I may be forcing the evidence to say what I believe is truth. So how do we know what is true without the bias of our hearts?

We have to be willing to go on a journey that contradicts everything we hold as true. Step back and ignore all preconceived notions of truth. Then perhaps we can see it. This is a very hard and humbling process but the reward is great.

I wrote this article to trigger thought and critical analysis even among believers. My conclusion is that this universe and everything in it is created. The creator must satisfy three conditions.

  1. Exist outside the universe
  2. Be self-existing
  3. Be all-powerful (omnipotent)

Take a tour of this universe and come with your own conclusions. I recommend visiting the world of astronomy it is so grand makes you feel small. Take a tour of the cell or the simplest life forms, their complexity will amaze you. Finally, I recommend visiting the world of fractals (find a cool explanation here) one that most you didn’t know existed. The beauty, complexity, simplicity and infinite nature will leave you feeling dizzy. Check out Maths Town channel on YouTube.

  1. You accept God with no proof at all. Belief in God is a product of upbringing, societal and cultural indoctrination. A desire for comfort and intellectual laziness. There is no evidence that God exists. You may have had some kind of personal experience that has convinced you personally that he’s out there, but that’s not evidence at all. You also base your arguments forgetting that existence is not property of human beings, as if other living things are not important. Your arguments are also incompatible with the idea that God completely created the world in 6 days as the bible dictates. You as a Scientist with a faith came up with another argument, the 6 days of biblical creation were a poetic way of describing long periods of millions of years during which God worked on the world.😂

    1. You say I accept without proof and yet I have listed evidence none of which you addressed. Everything I dealt with in this article is what is in science and never brought up the Bible anywhere, that was no mistake at all. Reply to issues addressed or at least one of them

      1. The big bang proposes that billions of years ago, the universe began in a tiny, infinitely hot and dense point called a singularity. This singularity contained not only all the mass and energy that would become everything we see today, but also space itself. The singularity rapidly expanded, spreading out the energy and space. So, where was God standing for him to create the singularity? You keep asking us and questioning the singularity while you not asking yourself the bigger question “WHO CREATED GOD?” or did he “pop into existence like the big bang?”

  3. If you read the entire article, you may have noticed that I gave three qualities for a being to qualify creating the universe. The first one is that He must be self existing. A god who was created had a beginning, but the creator God cannot have a beginning and qualify to create space and time. He operates outside them so is not limited by their laws. So when you talk of a created god you are talking of an entirely different god.

  4. Wow straight facts and you didn’t go to the Bible yet! Personally, I think that the so called Big Bang is the “Let there be light” moment. It won’t be the first time man trying to dissociate himself from God. And yet everything we do and we are is all from Him because we know nothing else other than this. I enjoy your articles and how you present your case. I pray people will be objective in this journey and not argumentative. I’m excited for the following chapters 🥳
