I was raised as a Catholic and for the longest time I believed it was the model christian church. In time God revealed to me that I was so caught up in practicing the traditions of the church rather than pursue a relationship with Him. So which is the best denomination? Let’s look at scripture;
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
John 17:20-23 NIV
Did you notice the denomination Christ mentioned while He prayed? He prayed for all those who believe that we may be united. He goes further and says “that they may be one as we are one”. That is the level of unity that God desires for Christians, like the Triune God.
So where does all this division come from? According to the Oxford dictionary a denomination is a recognized autonomous branch of the Christian Church. In short a Christian group with its own creed and worship practices.
All this options bring about confusion. God does not bring confusion but clarity;
For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
I Corinthians 14:33 NKJV
Anything that results in confusion is not from God. From His word it is clear that God intends for us to be one in mind and spirit.
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.
1 Corinthians 1:10 NIV
The only classification found in the early church was based on geographical location as is evident in Paul’s epistles and the letters to the seven churches in the book of Revelations. Now we have numerous classifications based on doctrines yet we all read one Bible. We are all so consumed defending our denominations that we forget we are called to preach the Gospel of Christ.
The church is called the Body of Christ, there cannot be two (or whatever number of denominations there are) bodies of Christ since Jesus is not divided. There should be only one church, one bride to Jesus. Whether we are called Christians or followers of the Way or Disciples of Christ we should be one in Him since we bear His Name. The church should present the qualities of God to the world like the Unity of the Trinity.
So what should I do as an individual who truly trust in the denomination I follow? The answer is simple be like the Bereans;
Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
Acts 17:11 NIV
Do not trust any human teacher/preacher 100%, no man is perfect. Check for yourself, ask the Holy Spirit to confirm it to you. And since we know that God doesn’t contradict Himself, He will confirm what is true and ecpose the lies. That way the false doctrine that divide us will quickly disappear and the church will once again stand united.
Amen
This is a great piece. Thank you for reminding me the fundamentals of life?
This is a beautiful piece. May God continue to use you.
